Creativity
The link between creativity and recovery is one which we explore whilst clients are in treatment with us. Our centres and communities provide a very safe place for clients to explore creative ideas and feelings, in relation to their addiction and to the world around them. Activities such as art, music, drama, film-making and dance can bring about new levels of understanding of the illness and of the wider human condition. This allows clients to see that present suffering and emotional discomfort can actually be seen in the context of allowing themselves time to heal, so as to move forwards into a better future. In this sense, addiction recovery is itself very creative – we accept and trust the recovery process, in order to create for ourselves a brighter, happier and more positive life.
Addicts and alcoholics tend to be people who engage in deep thought. The illness is often described as fear-based and this emotion can be experienced in overwhelming intensity, which is often what will trigger the mental obsession to drink or use drugs. We help clients to manage their thought processes and their impulsive energies by introducing them to creative activities, or in many cases encouraging clients to revisit their already developed artistic streak which has overflowed into addiction or alcoholism.
